Simple answer to Web 2.0 spread-out.

2008/05/28 22:37  biz/IT | , , , ,
Web 2.0 fails to produce cash.

This is the very answer to wondering about Social Networking Service and Widget. Number of visitors do not generate cash. Please do not package web 2.0 with fantasy of revenues any more.

I like FT. Cheers.

How mobile music industry survived against piracy challenge

2008/05/11 12:17  biz/IT | , , , ,

사용자 삽입 이미지

All the media says "Big crisis for music industry". Some people say "In the future, Only poors sing a song.". Are they true?

Historically music industry has been challenged by piracy issues. Now focusing on mobile music, I would very much like to talk about how it evolves and wins against piracy challenge.

When Sony invented "Walkman", people took out music out of their heavy audios. Analog-based media was very easy to be carried out and record. Of course it was challenged by piracy. Original records provided value of quality. In the nature of analogue media, sound quality gets worse as it copies more.

The digital media, Compact Disc(CD), provides much better sound quality. In addition, listeners can choose track numbers. These two value propositions make CD dominate the mobile music market. However it was also challenged by the same-quality faked CDs on the street. At the result, the original one won as it provided bigger-sized booklet and fine cases to make consumers have the ownership and fandom.

The next stage was to download music online and carry out with fancy MP3 players. The player was even much smaller than CDs and listeners can see what they are listening to. Most of all, they contains more numbers of music than one disc. These value prospositions kicked ass of CDs out of the market. However challenges of piracy are quite big at this time. Piracy online music provides much beter sound quality than legal music. (iTunes MP3 128Mhz and faked one usually 192, 320Mhz) Digital Right Management of legal music let consumers feel inconvinient as they want to normally play on three platforms such as mobile phone, MP3 players and PC.

Now we are on the progress of moving into the next stage. As the wireless network evolves to LTE, HSUPA and Mobile WiMax, people do not need PCs to download music and transfer it to the music platforms. In short, mobile music can stand alone. People will prefer streaming music if the music with quality sound plays without buffering. Number of streaming musics on the servers can not compare to that of personal juke box. You may well recall the concept of Oracle's network PC. These value propositions will surely conquer faked music. One concern I have is about the ownership. People used to own the music and the fandon as well. The issue will be how to convert people's common sense of ownership.

So the crisis reason at this stage of download is quite simple. Music providers did not give more value than that of piracyone. Please do not mention "Moral hazard" or "Government regulations". You had beter invest more time to think about the way of creating better value proposition.

Does Samsung go on the right track?

2008/02/17 12:31  biz/IT | , , , , ,
Samsung last year changed the approach to the market. They used to only focus on "premiere market", but now on "low-end market", too. At the result, they sold more handsets at the emerging markets, which was the base of Nokia, Finnish giant. Are they on the right track?

Yes, they are.
Changing the target to the emerging markets such as India and China seems fine as with high growth rate and huge potential. Especially at the end of 2007, subprime crisis hit developed countries. Customers with money are expected to tighten the belt in the year of 2008. Samsung seems to move to the risk-hedged world in advance.

Financial Highlights of Mobile Sectors 2007 Full year

* Copyright by Seo S. Lee. This table is based on each corporate 4Q 2007 IR presenation before auditing, thus some numbers can be changed when the final reports are released.

No, they aren't.
Nokia welcomes Samsung at the low-end market with unbelivable operating margin 21.66%. Nokia has beautiful cost structure with economics of scale. Design of Nokia handsets looks same, at least the concept does. They do not put "Vodafone" or "T-Mobile" on their phones. They are running  their own OS, Symbian, not vendors' own. In other words, supplier's power created cost-saving. On the other hand, Samsung is running out-sourced OS and chip-set. Samsung produced various kinds of handsets, such as GSM and CDMA. Thus, they should more focus on how to reduce the cost.

The problem is rising of competitors, like Sony-Ericsson and LG Electronics. While Samsung looking up, Sony-Ericsson with fancy Japanese design seemed to take the premiere market where used to be Samsung's base. Last year Samsung mobile average price(KRW 114,099) was cheaper than Sony-Ericsson's(KRW 173,046) by 51.7%. Samsung mobile was even cheaper than LG's(KRW 130,135). Sony Ericsson did operate the business better than Samsung did by looking operating profits with red colored numbers.

I do not know.
Last year Motorola was knocked out of the race and there is rumor that Chinese companies like Huawei and TCL will acquire its business. Then, new comers will transform the market econmics and also influence the cost structure of Nokia. Sony-Ericsson and LG Electronics can not guarantee the growth of premiere market as the tail of sub-prime crisis still exists. One thing that I can confirm is that the mobile market of 2008 will be much interesting than that of 2007.

Beautiful Bern Valley (아름다운 베르네)

IMG_4785
Beautiful Bern Valley(아름다운 베르네). I was dreaming about the land with the lyrics since I was a baby in Korea, South. It was simply more than my imagination.IMG_4720
Hello, lad? Actually the city Bern comes from bear (German Bär, 곰). In Bear Pits & Park, which is not far from the river, the legend bear easily could be seen.
IMG_4744
The city seemed like the perfect place for old wealthy. Atmostphere is peaceful and air is amazingly clean. At least no house music on the street.IMG_4769
The reason why I love Europeans, though Swiss is not member of EU. They simply are well off.IMG_4781
Even the bird, really looks like the one in Korea, was enjoying the sunshine.
IMG_4764
I felt like communicating with 10C people. Buildings and roads were hilarious and I believe my grandkids will feel like just same as mine.
IMG_4750
Wanna-be. Grey hair, black shirt, Canon camera and the perfect place.
IMG_4691
However be cautious! Sometimes they are enjoying to eat babies. Miss you the city.

James Blunt.

2006/12/20 15:28  life is | , , ,
I have never posted music things due to the property problems. However I have to post this as I am taking risk. This is the part of ITV programme, the Brit Award 2006 and I bought his CD.Thus, I don't think that it's gonna be the problem. If it is, just give me a call, James!

I, firstly, watched his music video during the lecture of Corporate Finance by the Prof. David Newton. Of course it was the break time, the music video was not for the material for Finance. His voice always helped me relaxed especially after drinking and clubbing. His voice through the Ipod at 4 AM is awesome! strongly recommend you to listen to this music with sunrise! Anyway, his music always brought me Nottingham-sick! All the radio channels in the GB played his music every time I listen to and they were so proud of him as he was on the billboard no.1 for the first time since Elton John's as far as I know.

Anyway, Just Listen to his voice and look at his eyes. Then go to the record shop and buy CDs for the Christmas gift. You like me, James?

James Blunt's You are beautiful!

Also appreciate Shangrila who gave me this video file! ;)

Night market in BangKok

2006/12/19 14:33  photos | , , , ,

We went to the night market next to Lumphini Park at the first night in BangKok. It looked just like Namdaemun(남대문) in Seoul. Local people were so kind and let me take pictures. Sometimes they welcome me to take pics which made me shocked, no one in the world can do like that! I, the baddest shopper ever who always look around shops and buy nothing, even bought the cannabis-like necklace in the night market!

Watch the Thai face!

I've been to Thailand for once, in 2005. It was nice, the view, the food, the massage, most of the people..except for the taxi. The driver doubled the charge for the same route only because it turned to be raining when I was about to return.

anyway, good place for a trip ^_^

The lecture about North Korea's nuclear weapon issue

2006/12/18 17:13  chinois/study | , , ,
There was the lecture about North Korea's nuclear weapon issue here at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Nowadays no one hesitates to call North Korea as 'the axis of evil' and understands the policy of the North Korea's government.

Mr. Cho Whan Bok, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and Macau explained about the policy of South Korea's and why we need to help North Korea. He tried to find the answer beyond the Nuclear Challenge and the Coldwar.

My granddad is from North Korea and he had never met his families more than 40 years. No one can understand how he felt about the separation. As Mr. Cho mentioned, it might be hard for South Koreans to find the logical solution about the North Korean Issue. A lof of South Koreans still support the North Korean Football team when they meet China or Japan.
